Beginner Figure Carving
Learn the basics of Scandinavian flat-plane figure carving. You will be provided a soft wood blank to carve either an “Oskar” or a “Karl” with a single carving knife. Scandinavian flat-plane carving uses a few simple cuts and leaves large flat planes intact. The class will include step-by-step details for the entire figure and instructions on finishing in the Scandinavian style. This class is taught periodically throughout the year at various locations. It can also be done for your carving club, social group or other small group. No experience necessary.
Jock has studied under several Norwegian masters, including Harley Refsal, retired professor of Scandinavian studies at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and widely considered the foremost expert on Scandinavian flat-plane carving. Jock will use Harley’s books on figure carving as a teaching aide and reference guide. He will also have a series of partially-to-completely finished figures to demonstrate how each figure should look as the student progresses through the carving.
