Jock Holmen
Handcarving in the old world tradition

Jock began woodcarving in high school.  After trying out several careers, including a stint in the handcarving department of Baker Furniture in Michigan, he opened his own woodworking business named “Norwegian Termite” in Chicago, demonstrating both his heritage and sense of humor (after all, a woodcarver is just a “creative” termite).  He builds custom furniture, cabinetry, fireplace mantels, interior and exterior architectural pieces, and many other items, utilizing various wood species, finishes and styles.   Jock also does restorative carving to replace damaged, lost or broken pieces or duplicating entire items or architectural details. In 2000, Jock relocated his business to Minnesota.

Jock and his work have been featured in:

American Woodworker magazine

St. Paul Pioneer Press

Twin Cities Sun Newspapers

Chicago Tribune

Carving magazine

National Wood Flooring Manufacturers magazine

Kitchens and Baths magazine

Jock was awarded his Gold Medal in woodcarving in 2009 at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American National Juried Exhibitions in Decorah, Iowa.  He is a six-time award ribbon winner at the Vesterheim exhibitions, and won the First Place Carving award at the 2005 Northern Woods Exhibition in Minneapolis.  He has appeared on television in the Twin Cities and Chicago areas, and is a frequent speaker and demonstrator at woodworking and Scandinavian festivals in the Midwest.

In addition to his commissioned projects, Jock is a contributing editor for American Woodworker magazine, and teaches woodcarving classes.

Jock has pursued his education and training in woodworking, drawing and hand carving throughout his life.  He has received training and tutoring from various American and Norwegian master carvers

and is well versed in the many styles of woodcarving throughout the world.

Jock is available to speak to your class or group on a variety of topics, including Scandinavian arts and crafts, woodcarving, and drawing,  including demonstrations of techniques.
