Below are some examples of completed projects.  Because I work only on commission, I have no catalog or specific set of items you order.  Each project or item is unique, made to your exact specifications.  Please call and talk with me about your request.

Handcarved Acanthus Cabinet

Northern white pine wall cabinet, Norwegian acanthus style.

Small cabinets such as this are common in the Scandinavian countries and can be left with a natural finish or painted.

These cabinets are typically made from softer woods, such as bassword or pine.

Carving Classes - Group or Individual

Beginner Figure Carving

Learn the basics of Scandinavian flat-plane figure carving.  You will be provided a soft wood blank to carve either an “Oskar” or a  “Karl” with a single carving knife.   Scandinavian flat-plane carving uses a few simple cuts and leaves large flat planes intact.  The class will include step-by-step details for the entire figure and instructions on finishing in the Scandinavian style.  This class is taught periodically throughout the year at various locations.  It can also be done for your carving club, social group or other small group.  No experience necessary.

Jock has studied under several Norwegian masters, including Harley Refsal, professor of Scandinavian studies at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and widely considered the foremost expert on Scandinavian flat-plane carving.   Jock will use Harley’s books on figure carving as a teaching aide and reference guide.   He will also have a series of partially-to-completely finished figures to demonstrate how each figure should look as the student progresses through the carving.

This scene depicts a typical day in the life of a housepainter, with a few things going wrong.  The inspiration started from the natural “imperfection” in one of the figures—knots are NOT always bad!
